How can the relationship between brand names and identity impact teenagers negatively or positively?
The articles dealt with the fact that brand names can have an either positive or negative impact on one’s identity. It portrays how wearing certain brands can lead to an “Identity Cue”. This relates to our universal theme, conflict, because as this topic shows many perspectives, it can essentially lead to conflict among many ideas being portrayed. Brand names and Identity are most related to the generalizations, may be natural or man-made, may be intentional or unintentional, and is progressive. This topic can be seen as man-made due to the fact brand names are names that people give to the products that they made. So, these man-made brands help create one’s identity or change their identity. Most of these companies make these widely known brands, without the intention or idea of how this can change a person on the inside. However, the person’s identity depends on them and how they choose which ever brand and whether this brand will affect their personality. The more someone obsesses over fitting in or looking cool, they progressively start changing their mindset/attitude. As me and my group began our topic, we first started off with clothing and how it can define your position in society. However, as we realized that we did not research much about it, we decided on changing it. Our group collaboration so far has gone pretty well because we’ve managed to divide the work evenly that way we all get the research done faster.
From the last time that I wrote about my research, I found out about many things that needed to be changed in my project. My driving question changed and our universal theme changed from conflict to relationships. We decided on doing that so it would be easier to make our driving question and it fit into our topic more. For our student-led research plan we decided on doing a survey so we would be able to see how brands can impact the student’s choices. Deciding on doing a survey was pretty easy since it was the most obvious choice. The most difficult part was trying to get it approved and trying to come up with perfect questions. If we want to complete the Information Synthesis Document, I think I need to find more information that corresponds with our generalizations. Our collaboration is going good for the most part. All of us are working on it equally and we are all putting time into our topic. I think what is working well for us is that we all complete the work in time and we all make sure we know what we have to work. However, I think that sometimes we still need to communicate more in order for us to continue completing what is required. We need to work on communication in order for all of us to be on the same page.
Since the last time I researched my topic, I learned that we had to go more depth in order to find information that would best fit our universal theme. I learned that when it came to us drawing things, I took a very long time because I wanted everything to look nice and maybe even almost perfect. I feel like I always over thought things about our project. In order to connect to our universal theme, generalizations, and topic, we decided on creating a puzzle which will contain a drawing of a silhouette of a person filled with brand names. In the back of the pieces, brand name tags will be drawn on. The drawing helps symbolize or show how people judge others when they wear brand name related clothes and how this figure had just been judged. In order to complete this, I will need to make sure to complete all the logos, front and back, and cut out puzzle pieces. Then, we will put this all in a box and scramble them all up. Our group’s collaboration so far is not going very well due to the fact that our partner, Victoria, does not contribute to the project very much.However, what is working well is that we try very hard to complete all our work in class. If that does not work out, we just take it home and finish there making sure we are prepared for the next day.
